OVERVIEW

 

 

Hike across the beautiful Southern Alps in the Canterbury region. You will be leaving with Dave Benfell and Michael Walker/ Hooky (Clear Lower Deck Group Leader) from Lake Coleridge and hiking through to various huts and going over the Brownings Pass into the West Coast. There is also some amazing trout fishing along the way so please feel free to bring your rods for some amazing fly fishing along the way!

We will have a mini bus for the North Island Travelers leaving from Tauranga and picking up participants as we travel through to Canterbury. Pick up for the end of the trip will be from West Coast for both North and South Island participants heading back to Lake Coleridge. We aim to have the North Island participants home no later than the 23rd of February (Weather permitted)

 

 

SKILLS REQUIRED

 

 

  • Suitable for beginners but you must have a good level of fitness to cross Southern Alps.

 

 

ACCOMMODATION

 

 

  • Accommodation is in Doc Huts and Camping Ground Chalets.

 

 

WHAT TO BRING

 

 

Clothing that is suitable for the season's weather conditions i.e:

  • Hiking Boots (or sturdy shoes)
  • Thermal Base Layers (top and bottom)
  • Outerwear - Sturdy waterproof jacket/ and pants
  • Warm layers for the colder days
  • Gear for warm weather
  • Sunhat, Warm hat, gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterbottle

 

Equipment

  • Walking Poles (Optional)
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Food and Cooking/Eating/Drinking Utensils
  • Fly Fishing Gear and Permit (if Fishing)

 

 

FOOD

 

 

All Meals and Drink must be brought by the participant.

 

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

 

 

SAFETY

Safety is always a number one priority when outdoors. You are required to listen to all safety briefings before commencing on the hiking trip. The event will continue through most weather conditions.

 

We strongly recommend that all members have their own medical insurance while on the event to cover for any medical and related costs (i.e helicopter out of area, hospital care, accommodation etc.)

 

The operator/s will remove any individual deemed unsafe from the event immediately if they act in a dangerous or reckless manner.

 

HEALTH & FITNESS

A reasonable standard of fitness is required as terrain is hilly and at times steep. If you are concerned about your own personal health and fitness level please contact us at SSAANZ to discuss and we will be able to guide you in whether this event is for you.

 

WEATHER

It is essential to be well prepared for the weather conditions. As we all know the weather in New Zealand can change dramatically over the course of a few hours so it is good to be prepared.

Visitors traveling to Arthur's Pass should plan on bringing a totally waterproof rain jacket since it will be raining some days. Plan on layering your clothes.
